Venture with Air Hackathon Opens!

Can you create business out of thin air?

The University of Helsinki and Slush are, together with the City of Helsinki and City-coordinated HOPE and Urbansense 5G projects, YIT Corporation and the Finnish Meteorological Institute, on the lookout for solvers that can turn a dynamic sample of urban air quality data into new ideas for applications that can make urban environments more liveable and sustainable.

Using unique outdoor and indoor air quality datasets from the City of Helsinki and early adopters wearing MegaSense sensors – as well as any other open data of your choice – we’re looking for applications that help improve planetary and / or human health or overall quality of life in urban environments.

The main prize of the hackathon is 20 000€ for the best solution submitted.

The Data

One of the key goals of the HOPE project is to find uses and utilizers for the new hyper-local real-time open air quality data collected by the project.

HOPE partner University of Helsinki’s MegaSense team has created high-resolution air quality datasets for the Hackathon from Pakila, Jätkäsaari and downtown Helsinki areas using combination of real HOPE mobile sensor data along with synthetic sensor data. The other part of the data consists of different types of environmental monitoring datasets collected from the Pasila Tripla mall by the Urbansense 5G project. Datasets are downloadable from the MegaSense data platform
